Welcome to the Admiral Moorer Middle School Science Spot!
The purpose of our "Science Spot" is to explain how the teachers of Admiral Moorer conduct and plan for their courses. This allows for parents and students to actively participate and prepare for the upcoming year.
Alabama has adopted the Common Core State Standards in K-12 Mathematics and K-12 English Language Arts released by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers. Science will not be far behind. With the adoption of these state-led education standards, we will are striving to embrace clear and consistent goals for learning to prepare children for success in college and work.
The goal of the Alabama Standard Course of Study for Science is to achieve scientific literacy. The National Science Education Standards define scientific literacy as "the knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts and processes required for scientific decision making, participation in civic and cultural affairs, and economic productivity."
6th Grade Earth Science Resources 6th
Graders at AMMS will explore Earth Science. Earth Science is the study of the Earth and its neighbors in space. It is an exciting science with many interesting and practical applications. The lessons will include plate tectonics, the composition of the Earth, the erosion, deposition and contents of the Earth's crust, and the age of the Earth. They will also study the occupation of Earth scientists. Earth Scientists use their knowledge of the Earth to locate and develop energy and mineral resources. Others study the impact of human activity on Earth's environment and design methods to protect the planet. Some use their knowledge about Earth processes such as volcanoes, earthquakes and hurricanes to plan communities that will not expose people to these dangerous events. Course of Study
